Google Ads vs Meta Ads · Australia

Google Ads or Meta Ads: which should a service business use first?

Google Ads and Meta Ads do different jobs. I choose the first channel by looking at how customers discover the service, what the business can show, and what happens after an enquiry arrives.

01 / DECISION

Check the buying situation before choosing a platform.

  1. 01Search for the service the way a customer would and note whether clear purchase intent already exists.
  2. 02List the real jobs, people, demonstrations or explanations available for creative.
  3. 03Confirm who answers calls and forms, how quickly they respond and how each outcome is recorded.
  4. 04Give the first test one lead definition, one conversion path and one commercial review point.
  5. 05Choose one channel unless the budget and operating capacity can support two clean tests.

02 / SEARCH DEMAND

When should Google Ads go first?

Use Google Ads first when a prospective customer already knows what they need and searches for that service with a clear reason to act.
Google's official Search campaign page explains that Search ads are designed to reach people while they are searching for the products and services a business offers. For a service business, that can make the channel a sensible first test when the search terms describe a real job, the service area is clear and someone can respond to the enquiry.
The search itself does not make the campaign commercially sound. Broad or ambiguous terms can bring the wrong need. A strong ad can still send the visitor to a page that hides the service, proof or next step. I check the search term, the ad promise, the landing page and the call response as one chain.
  • People commonly describe the service or problem in a search box.
  • The business can state the service area, availability and fit without vague claims.
  • Calls or forms reach someone who can qualify the job.
  • The account can separate a click, a valid lead and a booked job.

03 / VISUAL PROOF

When should Meta Ads go first?

Use Meta Ads first when the service becomes easier to understand after someone sees the problem, process, proof or offer in a useful piece of creative.
This can suit work with a visible result, a seasonal need or an offer that customers do not regularly type into a search box. The ad has to earn attention before it can ask for action. A generic stock image and a broad promise give the test very little to learn from.
I would rather start with a small library of real source material: an owner explanation, a permitted job, a process demonstration or a clear answer to a common buying concern. The Meta creative testing guide shows how to give each idea one job and judge it through lead quality rather than surface engagement.
  • The customer may not search until the problem or option is put in front of them.
  • The business has real visual or owner-led material that can explain the service.
  • The offer is clear enough to understand without manufactured urgency.
  • The enquiry path can qualify cold interest before it reaches the calendar.

04 / READINESS

When should you fix the lead system first?

Do not pay either platform to expose an operating problem you already know exists.
If calls regularly reach voicemail, forms sit in an inbox or no one records whether a lead qualified, the first campaign report will be hard to trust. The platform may show a conversion while the business cannot say whether the person was suitable, contacted or booked.
I map the handoff before increasing spend. That means naming the person responsible, the response rule, the qualification fields and the final statuses. Unknown stays unknown. It does not quietly become a good lead or a lost sale. This is also where the broader lead-generation system has to connect with the business's real capacity.
  • No agreed definition separates spam, valid enquiries and qualified opportunities.
  • Calls or forms do not have a named owner and response rule.
  • Bookings, cancellations and completed work are stored somewhere else or not recorded.
  • The business cannot accept more work in the promoted service or service area.

05 / FIRST TEST

How do you run a useful first-channel test?

Write one channel hypothesis, hold the offer and lead definition steady, and review the result at the business-outcome level.
A clean test does not need a promise that the platform will win. It needs a reason for choosing it. For example: people already search for this urgent service, so a focused Google Search campaign should produce qualified calls that the team can answer and classify. Or: customers understand this service after seeing the work, so owner-led Meta creative should produce qualified enquiries for the stated offer.
Set the budget and review window from the business's own economics and learning needs. I do not borrow a cost-per-lead benchmark to make the forecast look complete. The Google Ads lead-cost guide shows how to work backwards from gross profit and booking outcomes without pretending one market number fits everyone.
  • Write the reason this channel fits the buying situation now.
  • Keep the promoted service, service area, offer and conversion path specific.
  • Test the phone, form, message and attribution path before launch.
  • Review valid leads, qualification, bookings and completed work separately.
  • Record what will change, stay or stop after the review.

FIRST-CHANNEL WORKSHEET

Give each signal an honest answer.

Use this board before deciding where the first paid-media budget goes. The result is a starting hypothesis, not a forecast.

01

Existing search demand

Customers already describe the service, problem or urgency in search.

Google
02

Strong visual explanation

Real work, proof or an owner explanation makes the offer easier to understand.

Meta
03

Unclear lead ownership

No one owns the response, qualification or final outcome record.

Fix first
04

Both signals are strong

Choose the clearer first hypothesis, then add the second channel after a useful review.

Sequence
05

Neither signal is clear

Talk to customers, inspect enquiry records and sharpen the offer before buying traffic.

Research

This worksheet does not predict performance. Competition, creative, account setup, landing pages, response speed, pricing, capacity and customer demand all affect the result.

SOURCES

What this guide relies on

Official sources establish the platform or Australian compliance facts. The operating method is my practical interpretation, not a promise of a particular result.

QUESTIONS

Questions worth answering before you start.

Is Google Ads better than Meta Ads for service businesses?
Neither platform is better for every service business. Google Ads often makes sense when people already search for the service and the business can respond quickly. Meta Ads can suit an offer that needs to be shown, explained or remembered before someone searches. The lead path and follow-up can change the answer.
Should a small service business run Google Ads and Meta Ads together?
Only when the budget, creative supply and follow-up process can support two useful tests. If running both means weak creative, broad targeting or poor measurement, start with the channel that has the clearest job. Add the second after the first test has produced a reliable learning record.
Which platform produces better leads?
Lead quality depends on the offer, targeting, message, qualification and response process. Compare valid enquiries, qualified conversations, bookings and completed work. A cheaper form completion is not automatically the better lead.
Do I need a landing page for both platforms?
You need a clear conversion path. That may be a focused website page, a platform form, a call or a message flow. A higher-consideration service usually needs enough explanation and proof for the person to judge fit before enquiring.
How long should the first channel test run?
Set the review window before launch using the available budget, likely decision cycle and the number of closed outcomes you need. Do not invent a universal number of days. Avoid making a final call from a handful of early clicks or unresolved leads.
